By Rebecca Constabile

On Monday, August 6, 2018, the BISD school board met for a special session. The meeting got under way at six in the evening with all members in attendance. After a presentation by Superintendent Lacy Freeman, the board unanimously proposed keeping the current tax rate for the district. The current rate is $1.17 per $100.00 for maintenance tax and $0.12657 per $100.00 for the school debt service tax. A special hearing will be held Monday, August 20, 2018, at 5:30PM to vote on the proposed tax rate. Freeman showed that there is currently 7.2 million dollars in the district’s fund balance. Members also reviewed the proposed school budget for the 2018-2019 school year. They will vote to adopt that budget at the August 20th meeting. The current budget will end on August 31, 2018. The new budget will begin September 1, 2018.

The board then moved on to consent agenda items. The current law firm employed by the school will be retained for the 2018-2019 school year. They voted to approve approximately forty seven transfer students for the upcoming year. They also approved code of conduct handbooks for athletes, students, and employees. A new facilities agreement is going to be put in place when leasing school property. Little Dribblers and 4H were approved as extra curricular activities wherein the school will get attendance credit if students are traveling away during school hours for said activities as long as a faculty member is present. The board then approved the Texas Teacher Evaluation calendar.

Members went into closed session at ten minutes before seven. They returned at 7:32PM and stated that no action was taken in closed session. A stipend salary scale was then voted on. It was approved. The meeting adjourned at 7:33PM. The next meeting will take place at an earlier time than usual. It will begin at 5:30PM on August 20th due to the Meet the Bison event scheduled for seven that evening.
