Fort Boggy to hold free kids fishing clinic

By Sherry Matney

Kids can learn a lot about life while catching a fish. Kids can learn a lot about life while catching a fish. When was the last time you drug out your boots, slathered on sun screen and spent the day trying to land the big one? Do you remember the first time you caught a fish? Who were you with? Why did you go?

In our exceptionally busy world, full of cell phones, Facebook and Twitter, it might just be a really good idea to get away and take someone you love with you and that opportunity is just around the corner.

Betty Heffler is the Event Coordinator for Fort Boggy State Park and is she excited about an upcoming event in February. Ft. Boggy will hold its first ever Trout Fishing Clinic for Kids on Saturday, February 24, 2018. The clinic will teach basic angler skills to children ages 5 to 12. Those basics will be knot tying, safety, fish habitat and casting.

The clinic is free but there is a park entrance fee of $3.00 per person over 13 years old. An adult must accompany all children and no more than two children per adult are allowed to participate in the clinic. Heffler recommends that children be pre-registered; to preregister or if you have questions call Heffler at 903-322-3478 between 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Each child who participates will receive a free rod and reel, while supplies last. And for those who pre-register, a free t-shirt will be gifted as long as supplies last.

Ft. Boggy is located on Highway 75 about 5 miles south of Centerville. It is truly Leon County’s best kept secret and is the perfect place to help your child or grandchild learn to appreciate nature; to unplug from technology and to learn the ethics and life lessons of fishing.

More specifics will follow in the weeks to come.
