Bison JV suffer first loss

By Gene Pruitt

The Bison JV faced a very talented Tyler Grace private school team last week and suffered their first loss of the season. Four fumbles and a total of five turnovers were enough to see the JV go down in defeat 27-16.

The Cougars brought a fast-paced offense loaded with some speed and a QB that could throw the pass and guide the offense. The Bison defense came up with an interception by Benito Avila and a nice return with good blocking downfield provided by Lance Pauler. The Bison took 10 plays to get to the end zone with Brett Hoffman hitting Pauler for the final 22 yards. Tyler Burk provided the extra point run and the 8-0 lead with 2:22 to play in the first quarter.

The Bison kicking team pinned the Cougars at their own 12 but the Cougar offense took 8 plays to score and add the extra point to tie the game just a few seconds into the second quarter. The Bison took the kickoff from their 30 and moved into Cougar territory just outside their 30 before bogging down and giving the ball over on downs. Tyler went up on their next possession and kicked the PAT to take a 15-8 lead into the half. The last two possessions of the Bison were halted by a fumble and a pass interception.

Asa Henson turned in a good defensive game all night and got a sack to force a Cougar punt. Buffalo started the third quarter with a drive of 6 plays, which ended with a Hoffman pass to Eric Beshears for 21 yards and his first TD. The run conversion failed and the Bison closed the gap to 15-14.

Tyler and Buffalo each ended drives with the ball going over on downs before John Vaughn and Helmcamp tackled the Cougar running back for a safety and a 16-15 lead. The next two series of the Bison ended in fumbles as they were closing in on the goal line. The Cougars would take advantage of the turnovers and put up two more scores to seal their win.
