Bison Belles hold 60th Reunion

By Sherry Matney

After 12 months of planning the 60th Reunion for Buffalo Bison Belles came off with accolades of praise and glory. According to the first Belle Drum Major Betty Henson Reeder, there were more than 200 formers and fewer than 250 at the luncheon on Saturday at Buffalo High School.

The festivities began on Friday afternoon when several former Belles held meetings with their particular co-Belle members. From wherever the ladies met, they made their way to the Bison football field and gathered before the grand entrance.

At just the right moment, Reeder, with Belle members from the first year, led the group, arranged by decades. Beginning with the 1950s, 60s, etc. As would be expected the groups became larger as the year went up.

Reeder led the group of proud, high stepping alumni down the track before the home football stand. As the leaders reached the gate, Reeder twirled her baton and gave a high kick, just as she and the other turned to take their seats in the stands.

Most of the Belles remained for the game and half-time activities when the Homecoming King and Queen were chosen. The next event took place at the high school the next morning.

The cafeteria area of the high school reflected the care and love that went into the planning of the event. And, partly because of the décor and memorabilia, for a few minutes the women became junior high and high school girls. They giggled and talked and laughed about days past. They talked about the time that Belle’s skirt came off, or the time that other Belle slipped and fell in the mud. It was a wonderful day!!

Members of the committee who made the plans worked overtime on this project. Posters from varying years were set up, uniforms from years gone by were on display, and the celebration cake was decorated with a Belle hat on top.

This event was prepared and carried out by the Bison Belles Scholarship Committee. Reda Robinson, Cindy Port, Betty Reeder, Amanda Skelton, Brandy Ballard, Leah Pruitt, Amanda Harter.
