Bison and Bulldogs 8th grade battle to a 22-22 tie

The Bison battled the Marlin Bulldogs in a hard-fought battle last Thursday but could only end with a tie 22-22. Buffalo fought to a scoreless tie after one quarter and fought off the Bulldogs until just over a minute left in the half when Marlin put together a five play drive with a 65 yard run to the end zone and a two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead into the half.

Marlin took the second half kickoff but struggled and on third down Jamal Allen got an interception and a break for the Bison. Buffalo was forced to punt ending the next series. On second down Marlin scored another big run for 77 yards and a 2-point PAT. This increased the Bulldog lead to 16-0.

The ensuing kickoff was taken by Ethan Williams and went for 68 yards to the end zone. Reese Boyd took the two-point conversion in and cut the Marlin lead in half, 16-8, with 2:34 to play in the third quarter. On the very next kickoff Klaro Mancilla jumped on a loose football and Buffalo had possession. On third down Williams again got loose on a 21 yard run with quarterback Catch Thompson adding the two points and just that quick the Bison had the momentum and a 16- 16 tie with 1:22 to go in the third.

The Bison kickoff was dead at the Marlin 49 but a run for 38 yards and 13 yards put the Bison in the end zone. The extra point failed and with :37 to go still in the third quarter in seemed the door was left open for the Bison.

There was a lot of football to be played when Buffalo fumbled the ball to Marlin at the 30 but the Bison defense held after 6 plays and took over on downs. After a big 35 yard run by Boyd a fumble gave the ball back to the Bulldogs at the 7-yard line. Marlin would tie the score with 2:41 but neither team could get an offense going with penalties and mistakes hampering both teams. Alex Esparza turned in a good defensive game and all the Bison played hard against a talented Bulldog team.
