Bison continue their winning ways against New Waverly 49-13

By Mac Shadix

With Buffalo leading 21-6 in the first quarter New Waverly scored on an interception with four seconds remaining to bring the score to Bison 21-New Waverly 13. New Waverly failed to score again for the rest of the game.

James Rodell scored on a 30 yard run in the second quarter and Dirk Kilgore scored on a 33 yard pass from Colton Green. Green made another TD in the third period with a 14 yard run and Kilgore added a final TD on a 55 yard pass and run in the 4th.

The statistics show that the game was never really close. Buffalo gained 334 yards rushing and 208 yards passing for a total of 542 yards offense while New Waverly gained 139 yards rushing and 4 yards passing for a total of 143 yards.

Colton Green was 8 of 13 passing for 208 yards and one interception. Green also turned in 131 yards rushing and two TDs for 11 attempts. James Rodell measured 86 yards in thirteen attempts and garnered one TD. Jamaul Randle gained 77 yards in ten attempts with one TD and Dirk Kilgore rushed four times for 40 yards. Kilgore was the leading ground gainer after he added four receptions for 105 yards and two TDs to his rushing score of 40 yards.

As demonstrated by the score, it was another great game for the Bison defense. New Waverly was allowed to complete one of two pass attempts for a total of four yards. The Bison defense was nearly as stingy on the ground allowing only 139 yards in 33 attempts. Jordan Rogers was the leading tackler with 9. Kilgore and Marshall Jonas each had 8 tackles credited to them and Chase Thompson had six tackles, four for losses and one sack. Jesus Garcia had an interception returned for a TD and one caused fumble as well as a sack. Luis Porras had four tackles, three for losses and one sack.

Also on defense, Anthony Campos caused a fumble and had one fumble recovery. James Phillips had one fumble recovery while Blayne Stauffer had two tackles for losses.

Ivan Dominguez and Roberto Garcia each had one tackle for loss.

Game statistics for the first four games show that the Bison have scored more points in the second quarter of their games (89) than their opponents have scored in the entire four games (80). The Bison have seven runners who have scored seven or more yard per rush. The team average is 9.8 yards per attempt. Dirk Kilgore leads the team in receptions with 15 for 279 yards. He carries an 18.6 yards per completion record. The team average is 15.5 yards per completion.

These numbers confirm what a dominate team the 2017 Bison are at this time. Well coached, well conditioned, they seem poised to continue their winning ways into the play-offs.

The Buffalo Bison will host Bruceville-Eddy in a district game Friday, October 6, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
