U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady

By U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady

The Prayer for Firefighters & First Responders reads in part, “Father, I’m praying for those who hold dangerous jobs where lives often hang in the balance. When they face danger, be their stronghold. When they’re exhausted, give them Your strength. When things seem impossible, remind them that nothing is too hard for You. Bring them through fire and flood, that they may praise You.”

At no time has that prayer been more important than these past few days as inland flooding from Hurricane Harvey threatens nearly every street and neighborhood in our nine-county congressional district.

Thankfully our local, state and federal officials were prepared – and are still waist deep in challenges. Remarkable rescues and evacuations are saving lives as rivers, creeks and ditches exceed record flood levels. Shelters provide hope and comfort. Neighbors and volunteers are turning out in droves in the worst of conditions.

The rain is still falling and many of our neighbors are still being evacuated as I write this column, so we’re not out of the woods yet.

Whether you need help with FEMA, Social Security, Medicare, Veterans Benefits, the Internal

Revenue Service or getting a military service record or medals replaced, our caseworkers Janet Qureshi and Vita Swarers can help. When and where to get help in your community, including FEMA contact information, is on our website at https://kevinbrady.house.gov/contact/officeinformation.htm.

We’ve got a long recovery ahead of us, and we’ll need to work together.

Before Hurricane Harvey, the month of August has been all about America’s once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix its complex, unfair and broken tax code.

In addition to dozens of tax reform meetings and town halls throughout our district and Texas, I’ve been crisscrossing our nation leading the national effort on tax reform. I’ve been speaking with and listening to employees and local business leaders in states such as Kentucky, Minnesota, New York, California and Wyoming.

Our nation is hungry to support a simpler, fairer tax code that lowers taxes for families and local business, improves the lives of every American and vaults America back into the lead worldwide – so jobs will start returning to America.

The highlight was addressing the nation from the Reagan Ranch in California on the 31st anniversary of the House- Senate agreement on the transformational Reagan tax reform.

I observed that President Reagan wouldn’t even recognize the tax code America is burdened with today. Fairness has been replaced with outright favoritism for Washington special interests. Simplicity has been replaced by complexity and incredible frustration for taxpayers. And American competitiveness has become a casualty of Washington’s inaction as our global competitors have left us in the dust. Why are we sitting idly by as we watch our American jobs move overseas?

For the first time in 31 years the White House, House and Senate are all committed to overhauling this broken tax code and unleashing the growth of jobs and paychecks nationwide.

We cannot let the status quo in Washington win. What we are fighting for – simplicity, fairness, and competitiveness – is too important.

I am fully committed to delivering a new tax code written for a new era of U.S. excellence. It is time. And it won’t be easy. Our secret weapon against Washington, as President Reagan described them, is “the most important special interest of all – the American people.”
