Oakwood Ag Dept. Update

By Melissa Missildine

As many already may know, Oakwood has a new Ag teacher, Anna Milstead. She is working hard to beef up the Ag Department, as well as the FFA program. She has big plans for both, and has high hopes that the community will back her up every step of the way. Here are a few of the plans she has in place.

Milstead took a group of students to a judging contest a couple of weeks ago. Brittany Beggs, a Freshman at Oakwood, placed in the top 15% out of over 500 contestants for Livestock Judging at the Katy FFA Invitational CDE (Career Development Event.) Milstead, along with everyone else at the school and in the community, is very proud of Beggs’ accomplishment, as well as all of the contestants who worked so hard. The next contest is the Horse Judging CDE at the San Antonio Livestock Show on Valentine’s Day. Milstead and the students registered for the event are very excited for this opportunity.

The first annual Oakwood FFA Chili Cook Off was slated for this Friday, February 15. It has since been put on the back burner, in order to give everyone the opportunity to go out and support the Boys Varsity Basketball team as they travel to Chireno for the finals. The contact email for information about the Chili Cook Off is amilstead@oakwoodisd.net. The next FFA meeting is February 21, at 6:00PM in the Ag building behind the Oakwood High School. Any students wanting to join FFA this semester can pay their dues to Milstead ($15) by Feb. 28. They would then be eligible to participate in Judging Contests, a retreat during the summer, and Leadership events throughout the semester.

The Oakwood Ag Dept is having an Open House on Monday, February 25, at 6:00 PM to reveal plans for the program’s future. All are welcome.
