Such a beautiful van; red, white and blue with a beautiful eagle adorning the side. Why was it there? It was the launching of the Veterans Rural Transportation Program. Texas and three other states are participating in this pilot program for the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System to serve our veterans who reside in rural areas and have difficulty traveling to their VA healthcare providers. Texas is the number one Pilot Site and will be receiving 12 vans and 2 buses.

Leon County Service Officers, Gary & Susan Maples were there, along with our new Driver Coordinator, Larry Bass; Leon County Commissioner, David Ferguson and van Driver, Joyce Stark.

Why were we there? To get a peek at that beautiful van that will soon be based in Centerville, Texas. That’s right; Leon County will be receiving one just like it to transport our veterans to their doctors at the VA Clinic in Bryan and to the VA Hospitals in Temple and Waco. No longer will they have to worry about having to find transportation, they will be riding in style and comfort.

We should be taking possession of the new van in mid to late November and at that time we will be posting the schedule both in the newspapers and on fliers to be posted around the county.
