Bison lose in Area Baseball Playoffs

Bison Marshall Jonas (1) pitched a great game but lost 2-3 to the Lexington Eagles. Sherry’s Shots Bison Marshall Jonas (1) pitched a great game but lost 2-3 to the Lexington Eagles. Sherry’s Shots The Bison won Bi- District and traveled to Waco to play the Lexington Eagles for the Area Championship. Two games were played on Friday May 11th and a third game would be played on Saturday, if necessary. The Bison lost the first game 3-13 and were defeated 2-3 in the second game.

In the first game both teams failed to score in the first inning but the Bison put a run on the board in the second on a single by Caleb Ayers that drove in Jarrett Fishbeck who had reached 1st on an error. The Eagles came back strong in the bottom of the second scoring 8 runs on 6 hits and the Bison trailed 1-8. Bison Tristan Best reached 1st on an error and later scored in the top of the third and the Bison trailed 2-8. Ayers singled in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch and the Bison were behind 3-8. Fishbeck singled in the fifth but was stranded on base. The Eagles scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth on 5 hits and the Bison fell behind 3-10. The Eagles ended the game in the bottom of the 6th scoring 3 runs and the game was called because of the 10 run rule with the Bison losing 3-13. Ayers collected 2 singles, Best and Fishbeck had a single each as the Bison were held to 4 hits. The Bison used 4 pitchers with Jake Henigan pitching 1 2/3 innings, Mathew Jonas tossed 3 1/3 innings, Alex Dawson pitched 1/3 of and inning and Jose Sanchez faced 1 batter.

Sherry’s Shots Bison Tristan Best (2) beats out an infield hit. Sherry’s Shots The second game was a classic as Marshall Jonas pitched a brilliant game taking a no hitter until the 7th inning before giving up 3 runs and the Bison lost 2-3.

Jonas struck out the side in the top of the first. The Bison were the home team and scored a run in the first on a single by Marshall Jonas and a single by Chase Thompson that drove in Jonas.

Sherry’s Shots Jonas fanned 2 more in the top of the second. The Bison tacked on another run in the 2nd as Fishbeck was hit by a pitch and scored on a bunt single by Ayers and the Bison were on top 2-0. Jonas retired the Eagles in order in the 3rd and 4th innings.

In the bottom of the third Ayers made a sensational catch in right field diving to make the catch along the foul line for the third out. Fishbeck had a single in the 4th but was left on base. Jonas walked the leadoff batter in the 5th but retired the next 3 batters and the Bison still clung to the 2-0 lead after 5 innings. Jonas retired the Eagles in order in the 6th and had faced only 19 batters taking a no hitter into the 7th inning. Jonas had only thrown 75 pitches in 6 innings.

The leadoff batter for the Eagles beat out a slow roller to short and the next batter singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. The next batter popped up to 2nd and Jonas issued a walk to the next batter to load the bases with 1 out. The next batter slammed a double to left center that rolled to the wall and all 3 runners scored to put the Eagles ahead 3-2. The next batter flew out to center field for the 2nd out. A single and a walk loaded the bases but Jonas got out of trouble as the next batter hit a fly ball to Ayers in right field for the final out.

With their season down to 3 outs the lead off batter, Mathew Jonas, doubled to put the tying run on second with no outs. Tony Rios was sent in as a courtesy runner for Jonas at second base. The next Bison hit a fly to left for the first out. The next Bison hit a pop up toward right field that the 2nd baseman made a good catch and doubled the runner off 2nd for the third out and the Bison lost a heart breaker 2-3 that ended their season.

The Bison collected 5 hits as Ayers, Fishbeck, Thompson and Marshall Jonas collected singles and Mathew Jonas added a double. Marshall Jonas pitched a great game as he pitched 7 innings giving up 4 hits while striking out 8 and walking 3. He threw 105 pitches for the game. Several times in the game the Bison had scoring opportunities but failed to get the big hit when needed.

After the game several local Bison supporters had comments about the game and the season for the Bison. Long time Bison supporter Ken Jones said, " The Bison had a good year and only 2 seniors graduate and Jones expects the Bison to go even further in the playoffs next year." Another super fan Larry Tatum said, "Congratulations to Coaches Pauler, Thomas Orr, and the players on a great season and good luck next year." Father of Marshall and Mathew Jonas, Russell Jonas said, "The boys hustled and played hard all year and congratulations to the coaches and players and good luck next year."

Coach Bryan Pauler said, " The boys had a good season and matured as a team." Pauler said several players changed positions as Pauler saw he could use their talents in another spot. For instance, Caleb Ayers played second base as a junior but Pauler utilized his athletic ability and speed in right field."

The only seniors on the team are Caleb Ayers and Blane Stauffer so the Bison will be strong next year.
