Overheating corn silo forces closure of Sandersons Farms feed mill on Hwy. 79

By Mac Shadix

The Commissioners Court was told that an incident on Thursday at the Sandersons Farms feed mill just East of Oakwood had led to the evacuation of the plant and calling in “subject matter experts,” to review the situation. A similar Sandersons Farms plant at Easterly Tx. in Robertson County caused U.S. Hwy 79 to be closed for parts of two days in the middle of September.

Jimmy Carrigan, Leon County Emergency Management Coordinator told the court that the Oakwood and Butler Fire departments responded to the event. The road to the mill was blocked off and the plant evacuated. Feed trucks were diverted to area truck stops Carrigan said. The local fire departments withdrew upon finding extreme temperatures in a corn silo and “subject matter experts,” were called for. Sandersons Farms did not respond to requests for information.
