LCRTA celebrates TRTA Foundation Month

Contributed photo Leon County Retired Teachers Association met on Thursday, November 16 at 12:00 pm in Centerville at the Municipal Building for their monthly meeting and luncheon. The meeting room was decorated in the fall theme using fall leaves and fall flowers. The November luncheon was hosted by November hostesses, Judy Dorsett and her helpers, Margaret Heggins, Jane Ann Durbin, Eva Bell, and Verdine H. Perry.

The yearly November Texas Retired Teachers Foundation program was presented by the Foundation Chairman, Jane Ann Durbin. The TRTF is a part of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. TRTF is made up of four programs: Beginning Teacher Scholarships, Classroom Assistance Grants, “A Helping Hand’, and the Legacy Campaign as well as the Lehr-Pritchard Endowment Fund. An update was given on each of the four programs. A yearly donation was collected by LCRTA to be sent to TRTF. The donation will to be given to assist “A Helping Hand” program. The purpose of this program is to aid public education retirees in critical need. The program has provided over $102,000 in grants to more than 100 retirees.

LCRTA president, Verdine H. Perry presented a gift of appreciation to Jane Ann Durbin. Committee reports were given by committee chairmen. Legislative chairmen, Al Campbell; information and Protection chairman, Mae Wagner, and Lavern Manning, Retirement Education chairman discussed issued pertinent to their committees. Mr. Campbell handed out copies of his monthly Leon County RTA written report. Health chairman, Birdene Perry, led the group in exercising.

Lavern Manning’s, Jane Ann Durbin’s, and Dorothy Bottoms’ birthdays, were celebrated with a birthday cake and birthday gifts provided by President Perry. Door prizes were won by Al Campbell and Lavern Manning.

The LCRTA 2017 Christmas party will be held at Robles in Centerville on Wednesday, December 13 at 11:30 am. The January 25th LCRTA meeting with be at 12:00 pm in Centerville at the Municipal Building.
