The Bison had the Hearne Eagles at home last week. The Bison were 9-0 and Hearne was 7-2. Both were 5-0 teams in district fighting for the championship. Just seems it could not play out any better, but on this night it seemed things went the way of the Eagles and after a late come back the Bison fell short 26-19.

The Bison defense put together a good game and standouts like Chase Thompson, Jesus Garcia, and Luis Porras had great games but the Eagles were well prepared for the offense and seemed at times to be in our huddles, knowing what we were going to do. The Bison got on the board first with Colton Green carrying the ball four straight times, the last for 16 yards and the score with 4:56 to go in the first quarter. The extra point kick failed and Buffalo took the lead 6-0.

The Bison attempted an on-side kick but the speed of the Eagles got there first and took over at the 49. After a Bison penalty the Eagles went to the air where Dirk Kilgore got the interception at the 12. Hector Dominguez back for his first game, after being out for injury, went for 19 yards and a first down. This would be the highlight of this series and Buffalo was forced to punt. Hearne had one more possession but the half ran out to end the drive.

The Eagles came out of halftime with a new agenda it seemed and took the kickoff back 9 yards to the 49 then Javon Jefferson’s speed kicked in and he got to the corner and went 51 yards for a TD with less than a minute off the clock. The kick put Hearne up 7-6.

Kilgore brought the kickoff back to the 44 but the Eagles shut the offense down and a fake punt on fourth down was stopped and Buffalo turned the ball over on downs. Micah Smith scored for Hearne with a 36 yard run with 8:27 left in the half. The kick failed but the Eagles were up 13-6. Kilgore had another good return for 29 yards to the 40. Buffalo was still in good shape but a sack on third down lost 11 yards and a punt. The Eagles had to start from their1-yardd line but 10 plays later they were into the Bison end zoned from the 1. Another failed extra point left the score 19-6 with :14 to go in the third.

Hearne had to re-kick after a penalty and the Bison were set up at the 40 but a long pass attempt was intercepted at the 31. This Hearne possession started with a Garcia sack but 7 plays later the Eagles were again in the Bison end zone from the 34 yard line. The kick was good and Hearne led Buffalo 26-6 with just over 10 minutes to play in the game. Once again Kilgore set the offense up with a 25 yard return to the 48 and on second down Green hit Kilgore for a 48 yard pass and run for the Bison score, the first since the first quarter. This time the kick was good and Buffalo had closed the gap to 26-13 with 9:58 on the clock.

Another on side kick gave the ball to Hearne at the 49 but sacks by Thompson, Porras, and Marshall Jonas gave the ball back to Buffalo on downs. A pass to Kilgore put the Bison on the Eagle 14 but incomplete passes and a sack turned the ball over on downs. The Bison weren’t finished yet, and the defense had tackles for loss before Roberto

Garcia covered an Eagle fumble at the one. Buffalo promptly ran the sneak in for the score but another failed conversion left the score 26-19 at the 3:58 mark.

The Bison defense came up big again and forced the Eagles to punt. Time was running out but Buffalo had another shot at the tie or win. Green went to the air and on fourth down hit Jamaul Randle, sophomore, and the pass and run went to the Eagle 14 but an untimely fumble was recovered by Hearne and they just had to kneel to end the game. Buffalo will meet Mildred this Thursday night at 7:30 in Athens for the first round of the playoffs. We can still go deep but this route is a little more difficult. I would love to see the Eagles win also and meet them in the regional finals. I just don’t think they can win two in a row.
