7th grade wins again

By Gene Pruitt

The Bison 7th graders were in action last week during the open week and took on a good Iola Jr-Hi team. The Bison came away with the 20-16 victory. Iola had both 8th and 7th grade taking part in the game and kept the ball the whole first quarter and over a minute into the second before they were able to get into the end zone. The two point conversion attempt failed to leave the score at 6-0 Bulldogs.

It was a short lived lead as the Iola kickoff was taken by Kyle Harrison at the 34 yard line and returned 66 yards for the tying score at 6-6.

Jesus Zaldivar was first down field on the kickoff and stopped the Bulldog return at the 21. On fourth down Jacob McGill had a tackle for loss to give his offense the ball on downs. It took the young Bison seven plays to take the lead before half with Harrison going the final 17 yards and his second TD of the night.

Buffalo got the ball to start the second half but a high snap over the quarterback on second down set the Bulldogs up at the Bison 39. Iola hit a pass for 18 yards and a first down before Angel Flores had a tackle for a 1 yard loss but Iola was able to keep the drive alive and on the 6th play went 5 yards to tie the game at 12-12. A complete pass for the two point conversion put the Bulldogs up 14-12 with :18 to go in the third quarter.

The Iola on side kick was covered at the 44 by Gavin Pruitt and the offense ripped off 7 plays down the field to pay dirt with Joseph Guzman going the last 21 yards. Jacoby May added the extra point to make the score 20-14 with 2:22 to play in the game.

A Bison penalty on the kickoff set Iola up at the Buffalo 48. The Bulldogs got 13 yards on first down but on second down Gabe McLemore stepped in front of an Iola pass to kill this drive. Iola would make the end exciting by forcing a safety and close the gap to 20-16 but the Bison defense held and Zaldavar got another sack to take the victory.

This team is still undefeated and had only given up one TD before this 16 points. The 7th and 8th and JV will be at home this week with a district game with Anderson-Shiro.
