From the Desk of the County Judge

County Judge Byron Ryder

Fall is in the air and winter is on its way. Very soon we will be celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas with family and friends as well as ringing in the New Year 2018. Time just seems to fly by. The 2017-2018 Budget began on October 1 and is in full operation. There was no tax increase even though we lost about $88,000 in actual revenue from the previous tax year. The Commissioners Court again made more cuts to the budget and our employees and elected officials did not receive raises. The one problem that causes us much grief is the Unfunded Mandates sent down to us from the State and Federal Government such is indigent health, indigent defense and taking care of state prisoners in our jail, just to name a few. Leon County is very blessed because we have NO debt and that allows us to maintain our low tax rate compared to counties that have a lot of debt. The practice of paying CASH is something our Commissioners Court it very adamant about and helps us continue the services that are available in our county.

The High Speed Rail Project is still trying to move forward with much resistance from the rural counties on the route. This project only helps Dallas and Houston and we are very sure that in the future this will become a tax burden to our State. Please just be cautious in dealing with the representatives and make sure you understand what you are signing if you have land on the route.

We just completed another very successful Veterans and Military Appreciation Day in our County. We are thankful every day for their service and dedication to our country. It is an honor to set aside one day to say Thank You. A special thanks to everyone who came and to all of those behind the scenes people that worked so hard to plan and put it all together. Plans are already under way for next year. We can always use help and if you desire to help let me know. Please let your elected officials know if we can be of service to you in any way. We serve at the will of the people and consider it an honor to work for and help the citizens of Leon County.
