Sherry’s Shots Domestic violence is best understood as a pattern of abusive behaviors– including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks as well as economic coercion – used by one intimate partner against another (adult or adolescent) to gain, maintain, or regain power and control in the relationship. Batterers use of a range of tactics to frighten, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, often injure, and sometimes kill a current or former intimate partner.

October is the month in which these kinds of behaviors are brought to the forefront with the hopes of breaking the cycle. It is a fact that women who have been in an abusive relationship often find another abuser with which to live.

Leon County has led a charge against domestic abuse for seventeen years. There were 252 cases filed in Leon County during 2016 and one death of an 18-month-old boy. One-hundred fifty-eight women died as a result of abuse last year in Texas.

Although women and children are the most likely victims, men may be targets as well. Those needing help are encouraged to contact the Leon County Sheriff's Department, even if they are not sure the action qualifies as abuse. Tanya Foster is the victims' advocate for Leon County and a worthy warrior for her group.
