U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady

Taking Big Steps Towards Harvey Recovery and a Fairer, Simpler Tax Code
By U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady

In the wake of this year’s devastating hurricanes, the House Ways and Means Committee - which I lead - is working to provide resources and relief to help American families. These storms left a trail of incredible destruction through Texas, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

The tax relief package ensures that storm victims are able to focus on recovering and rebuilding, not Washington’s broken tax code. This is just one part of our efforts to ensure Texans, and all Americans impacted, are able to get back on their feet as soon as possible.

The road to recovery will be long and difficult, and take a sustained effort at every level – state, local, and federal. Together, we are committed to passing legislation that offers additional tools and support to help our communities rebuild stronger than ever.

Last week I had the chance to survey Harvey damage with fellow members of the Texas delegation and with Speaker Paul Ryan. We also joined Team Rubicon in Friendswood to provide a helping hand and show our support for the excellent volunteer work they are doing for flood victims.

Hurricane Harvey has taken so much – businesses, homes, even family and friends – but it could never take the sense of community and Texas pride that drives these fine men and women. Much work is still to be done, and I am committed to working with my congressional colleagues and President Trump on a relief package focused on giving storm victims the flexibility they need without being saddled with what Washington wants.

After seven years and over 200 committee hearings outlining the growing problems and the impending collapse of Obamacare, this week the Senate has the opportunity to advance a repeal. The House delivered by passing the American Health Care Act.

Every single GOP Senator ran for office on the promise to repeal and replace Obamacare. I hope they will keep that promise by passing their proposal. Anything less would be a total disappointment.

For those trapped in Obamacare, we must continue to look for immediate solutions to deliver relief, stop premiums from soaring even higher, and help people get health care that’s right for them.

This week, the House, Senate, and the White House will release a consensus document that lays out the framework for crafting bold legislation that reduce taxes for all Americans, and grows jobs and paychecks nationwide. For the first time in over three decades, your government is committed to overhauling our broken tax code and unleashing the American spirit and ingenuity that makes our country great.

This is a once in a generation opportunity.

If you are serious about achieving true pro-growth tax reform, we are serious about working with you - no matter what side of the aisle you are on. This is your tax reform package, so I encourage you to reach out to my office and to our two Senators to voice your thoughts and concerns with our current tax code.

This won’t be easy, and there are many challenges ahead, but the time for change is now. So get ready - it’s going to be a busy fall - and at the end of the year, we will make history.
