Bison JV start season 2-0

By Gene Pruitt

The Bison JV had to find an opponent last week to have a game because the varsity had Normangee and they did not have a JV team so they traveled to Blooming Grove to take on a talented team and had to battle after a first quarter 0-0 score to take the 19-0 victory.

Buffalo kicked off to put the defense on the field first. The Lions took the kick from their 34 but could manage only 2 yards on three tries and had to punt, to the Bison 40 where Eric Beshears returned to the Lions 42. The Bison offense was also held in check, turning the ball over on downs. The next two Lions possessions ended in punts on three and out and the Bison fumbled to end their threat.

Buffalo was pushed back to their 10 on a punt and went into the second quarter on second and 9 where Hoffman hit Jordan Rogers for 13 yards and their first first down. Hoffman ran for 6 followed by Christian Cannon for 4 and a first down. Cannon picked up 11 on second down to keep the 13 play drive going to the 9 yard line but a loss and penalty moved the ball back to the 19. Hoffman again hit Rogers, this time for the 19 yards and the first Bison score. The failed extra point attempt made the score 6-0 with 3:59 to play in the half.

The Lions took the kickoff from their 43 and a big penalty moved the ball into Bison territory where Buffalo jumped on a fumble and took possession at their 45. Hoffman went to the air, connecting with Beshears for 17 yards and a first down. The offense mixed in a few Beshears and Cannon runs then Hoffman again linked up with a Bison receiver, this time Lance Pauler went for 28 yards and a Bison TD. Francisco Saldana hit the conversion to make the score 13-0 with :38 to play in the half.

Tyler Burk ran the second half kick back 33 yards to the 48. Beshears took the hand off on second down and went 51 yards to pay dirt. The extra point failed but the Bison had a 19-0 lead. Gunner Ducat had a big hit on third to force a Lion punt but a fumble gave the ball back to Blooming Grove. The Lions put together a drive of 9 plays but Ethan Doyle had a stop for no gain and Junior Vasquez had a sack to end the threat and turn the ball over to start the final quarter.

The Bison went to the ground game to eat some clock and Beshears led the attack with 43 yards on the final possession to seal the victory. John Vaughn again turned in a good game on defense along with Rogers, Ducat, and Sandate. The young Bison will be back at home this week and will face a test from Desoto in place of a Grapeland JV.
