Texas Dept. of State Health Services announce plan on volunteer food prep

By Mac Shadix

Chris Van Deusen Director of Media Relations Texas Dept. of State Health Services released the following statement in regard to volunteers feeding evacuees. “Over the weekend, we were able to get a waiver from the governor for the duration of the disaster declaration that should clear up any issues with volunteer groups donating or serving food. It exempts volunteer organizations from the food regulations, as long as they’re providing food for free and post a sign saying it was prepared off-site by volunteers. As long as they follow those guidelines, they won’t have any problems from us.”

The issue was brought to public attention when a TDSHS sanitationist shut down a volunteer effort to provide food for evacuees in Buffalo Texas. County Judge Byron Ryder and State Represenative Trent Ashby both contacted TDSHS after they learned of the situation.
