Leon County well stocked with propane before Harvey struck

By Mac Shadix

Roy Reed from Leon Gas Company in Flynn relayed the following report of propane supplies during Hurricane Harvey. The Mt. Belview propane supply depot was closed from Saturday August 26 thru Tuesday August 29. The plant stayed operational but transports could not access it due to water covering surrounding roads and then the Crosby chemical plant caught fire and the area was evacuated closing a major road into the plant. The Mount Belview plant is the largest propane storage facility in the world, using underground caverns carved from the underground salt dome. A smaller facility in Hull was also shut down.

Reed said Leon Gas had all their bulk storage filled days before the storm, and they also had access to their suppliers plant in Chico, Tx., West of Fort Worth. Other Texas plants were also available. Price increases were slight and less than expected.
