District 57 House of Representatives
I'd like to start the column by highlighting an event that is particularly special to me and other members of the Legislature. This week I joined my colleagues, and hundreds of other Texans, when we gathered in prayer on the South steps of your Capitol to launch the Texas Legislative Prayer Caucus. With the 85th Legislative Session well underway, having the opportunity to join fellow legislators in asking God for the wisdom needed to carry out the duties of office is something I deeply cherish. In that regard, here is an update on what's happening in Austin…
The Speaker's office released the much anticipated committee assignments this week, and I'm pleased to announce that I will continue serving on both the House Committees on Appropriations and Natural Resources. I've also been selected to serve on the House Calendars Committee. Committee meetings will start this week and will carry on throughout the legislative session, as we consider and debate various pieces of legislation before they reach the House floor.
Although things are ramping up with this announcement, please be aware that I make it my top priority to have plenty of time for constituents from back home. Whether you're in Austin and would like to see me, or if you're just wanting to call and express your opinion, please know that we enjoy hearing from you.
Meetings and Engagements
The East Texas Food Bank made their way to my Capitol office this week and I wanted to take a moment to recognize them for the incredible work they do. The East Texas Food Bank distributes food to over 200 partner agencies in an effort to feed those in need throughout 26 counties in East Texas. Last year, the East Texas Food Bank distributed 21.8 million meals to partner agencies and programs throughout their region. It was a pleasure for me to visit with them about their funding and the tremendous work they do for many in our communities.
This past week I also had a number of 4-H kiddos come by my office to learn more about the work that we do here. Having a couple of boys currently involved in 4-H, and as a former 4-H member myself, I have a deep appreciation for what this cherished organization does by instilling values such as citizenship, leadership, and good moral values in our young people. I’m proud to support their efforts at the state level.
