Bison rush past Normangee 31-8

Sherry’s Shots The Bison varsity hit the road to Normangee to face the Panthers on September 2nd. The Panthers kicked off and the Bison began their first scoring drive. On 4th down a bad snap caused quarterback Colton Green to have to scramble but Green found Shelley Pate with a 15 yard pass completion to keep the drive alive. Facing 2nd and 16, Green hit Blayne Stauffer with a 13 yard pass and the Bison faced a 3rd and 3 at the Panther 15. Hector Dominguez gained 2 and then Dominguez gained 3 more to keep the drive alive. Looking at a 3rd and goal at the 4 Matt Gilliam smashed over for the touchdown and the Bison led 6-0 with 7 minutes left in the 1st quarter. The PAT was no good. Fernando Mancilla kicked off for the Bison and the Lions had a first down at their own 40. With the Lions facing a 3rd and 19 Bison Joel Montano intercepted a pass and the Bison were in business at their own 36. A quick pass from Green to Gilliam netted 40 yards and the Bison had a 1st an 10 at the Panther 27. Green ran for 6 and Dominguez picked up 15 yards. With a first and goal at the 4, Dominguez scored and the Bison had a 12-0 lead with 3:10 left in the opening quarter. Again the PAT failed. The Bison defense dug in and forced a punt and began their 3rd scoring drive from the Bison 31. Green picked up 7 but the next pass was intercepted and ran to the Bison 9 where the Panther runner was hit hard and the fumble was recovered by the Bison. The Bison began a long drive that ended as Dominguez rambled 39 yards for a touchdown and the Bison had a comfortable 18-0 lead with 10:55 left in the 2nd quarter but again the PAT failed. Neither teams could score and the 2nd quarter ended with the Bison on top 18-0.

Sherry’s Shots Mancilla kicked off to begin the 3rd quarter and again a strong Bison defense forced a punt and the Bison had the ball on their 38. Behind the running of Gilliam, Trevor King and Dominguez the Bison faced a 4th and 1 before Dominguez broke loose on a 51 yard run before being tackled at the Panther 3. Green scooted across from the 3 and the Bison had a 24-0 lead with 6:24 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Mancilla drilled the extra point and the Bison led 25-0. The Panthers put their only points on the board as they scored on a 11 yard run and after the 2 point conversion was good the Bison led 25-8 with 6:52 left in the game. The Bison took the kickoff and Calvin Stephens picked up 7 and Mancilla added 7 more on the next play. Mancilla picked up 9 and 3 on the next 2 carries and the Bison had a first down at the Panther 38. Five plays later Mancilla broke loose on a 29 yard touchdown and the Bison had a 31-8 lead with 2 minutes left in the game but the PAT was no good leaving the final score 31-8 with the Bison scoring their 2nd convincing win of the young season. The Bison moved the ball very well but was hampered by 14 penalties compared to 3 penalties called against the Panthers. Dominguez picked up 217 yards on 13 carries and scored 2 touchdowns, Green added 89 yards on 12 attempts scoring 1 touchdown, Mancilla rushed 6 times gaining 57 yards and scored a touchdown, Pate picked up 52 yards on 7 carries, Gilliam had 4 rushes for 24 yards and a touchdown and Calvin Stephens carried 3 times for 19 yards. Green attempted 15 passes and completed 7 for 118 yards. Pate caught 3 passes for 37 yards, Gilliam caught 2 for 53 yards, Stauffer 1 catch for 15 yards and Dirk Kilgore snagged 1 for 13 yards. Sammy Cervantes was credited with 16 tackles, including 8 tackles for losses and 5 quarterback sacks. He also caused 2 fumbles and had 2 quarterback pressures. Joel Montano and Ryan Rath each had an interception. Rath also had a punt returned for a touchdown but it was negated by a penalty. Kilgore had 6 tackles, James Rodell had 2 tackles for losses, Dominguez caused a fumble, and Luis Porras and Chase Thompson each recovered a fumble. The Bison had 24 first downs and 651 yards of offense, including 533 yards rushing. The Bison held Normangee to 9 first downs and 184 yards of offense.

The Bison host Grapeland on September 9th with the kick off at 7:30 pm.
