Charles S. Smith
Funeral services for Charles S. Smith, age 87, of Leona, Texas were held at 1 PM, Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville. Bro. Dean Easterling, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Centerville, officiated and burial followed in the Leona Cemetery.
Charles Smith was born September 7, 1926 in Houston, Texas. His parents were Charles and Millie (Pledger) Smith. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He was a plumber and a member of the Plumbers Local Union #068 since 1947. He was employed by the City of Houston in 1973 and retired as a Plumbing Inspector for the City of Houston in 1983. He and his wife had earlier purchased land in Leona in 1977 and, after his retirement, they moved to Leon County permanently.
Mr. Charles was a member and Deacon of Calvary Baptist Church since 1983. He was an active and participating member for many years until his health began to fail. His hobbies included gardening, taking care of his cows, farm and ranch work and operating his Ham Radio. For many years after moving to Leon County, he and his wife, Anna Beth, were the grounds’ keepers for Pleasant Ridge and New Salem Cemeteries. He had been a Ham Radio operator for years and his call letters were WA5AQD.
Mr. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents. He died in a Bryan hospital on March 13, 2014.
Surviving family includes his wife, Anna Beth Smith of Leona; four daughters, Carolyn Price of Palacios, Texas, Karen Kressin (Roger) of Colfax, Wisconsin, Charlene Thompson of Madisonville and Mary Greco of Palacios, Texas; seven grandchildren, Charles “Charlie” DeLorge, Gina Kelly (Daniel;), Berne Kent (Margie), Sunshine Price (Phillip), Charlea Paulsen (John), Tiffany Curtis (Kirk) and Matthew Greco; nineteen great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
Serving as pallbearers: Matthew Greco, Charlie DeLorge, Kirk Curtis, Berne Kent, Elias Reyes, Zack Kelly and Tray Taylor.
Walters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
