Happy Easter from Lone Star Community Center
     Easter bunnies and kids and eggs with candy inside just make for a perfect Easter Egg Hunt. The Lone Star Community Center hosted its 20th hunt on Saturday, March 30 with about 75 children in attendance.  Noni Ward and daughter, Mary Trull, did the leg-work on this event.

Oakwood students benefit from Leon County Retired Teachers Association’s book drive
     Once a teacher, always a teacher. It gets in your blood and you just cannot help yourself...just ask members of the Leon County Retired Teachers Association! Every year, they hold a book drive to benefit the children of a local elementary school. This year, the students of Oakwood Elementary are benefiting from the drive.

Grand Jury returns seven indictments
     Whitney T. Smith, District Attorney met with the Leon County Grand Jury members March 21, 2013 and presented seven cases of crimes alleged to have occurred in Leon County, for their review. An indictment (true bill) was returned on all seven cases.

Kevin Ellis issues appeal to citizens in fight against crime
     Responding to the increased number of citizens wanting to assist law enforcement officials and build a stronger partnership in the fight against crime, Kevin Ellis today announced that Leon County Citizens are being invited to become Associate Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas.

American Legion Post 335 to meet April 6th
     Our next American Legion Post 335 meeting will be Saturday, April 6th at 6:00 PM at the Centerville Municipal bldg, across from the Post office. Our meetings are open to all Veterans and their wives or significant other. Also Widows of Veterans. We will have a Pot Luck supper so bring a little extra to share with your brother and sister members.

     Shopping, sewing, accessorizing and garment care were the topics of the evening at the Leon County 4-H Fashion Show on Friday, March 22, at the Buffalo Junior High Auditorium.

Buffalo EE Club meets at home of Linda Long
     The Buffalo Extension and Education Club met for the month of March at the home of Linda Long. Eighteen members were present . Mrs. Long gave the opening prayer and everyone enjoyed an array of covered dish foods and conversation.

The Horse’s Mouth Writers Group to meet April 23rd
     Local writer Karen Hankins, author of Proof of Worth, has now joined the group and has already given the group some helpful tips. Karen will be explaining how to format and publish Ebooks at our next meeting to be held at 6:00pm, April 23rd, at the Horse’s Mouth Bookstore.  Karen also read her beautiful short story about losing her faith and finding it again.

     Buffalo Elementary Kindergarteners had a special Easter treat on Wednesday morning when they participated in an “Egg Drop” at the Elementary School. Eggs have long been associated with Easter so Kindergarten teachers decided to combine fun and science.

Retired educators journey to the Texas capitol
     The Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) sponsored “TRTA Day at the Capitol” on March 20 in Austin. Approximately a thousand retired public educators from all over the state attended the event. Retirees arrived by buses and private cars. They were introduced and honored in the Senate and House Chambers by Senator Robert Duncan and Representative Jim Keffer.

      Leon County’s agricultural future is in good hands -- like those of Danielle Dickson (12), who has been showing at the Leon County Youth Livestock Show since she was in the third grade.

Annual Leon County Livestock Show results
     Submitted by, Melinda Wilson, Show Secretary  199 exhibitors from the across the county came together to showcase their livestock projects at the 2013 Leon County Youth Livestock Show where they were rewarded for their hard work at the Premium Auction Sale on Friday, March 29th.

     A tradition of the night of the Premium Sale is the recognition of those students are are participating in their final county show. Several of this year’s seniors had shown each year since they were first eligible for 4H in the third grade.

2013 Sale of Champions
     The Premium sale kicked off with the sale of the Big Bird which was exhibited by Allison Grissett of Buffalo 4H. Allison’s big bird weighted in at 8.083 lbs. State Representative Trent Ashby purchased the Big Birds at $2200. The proceeds from the sale of the Big Bird goes to the Leon County Livestock Show Building Fund.

Sibling rivalry sharpens teens’ competition
     Participation in the Leon County Youth Livestock Show often becomes a family tradition, with younger siblings learning the ropes from big brothers and big sisters. The kids often share or split the chores related to caring for their project animals, but when it comes down to Show Time, everyone is on their own.
