Van’Go’photo Buffal’s Lady Bison softball team improved their district record to 2-3 this week with a loss to Mildred and a road win over Marlin

BHS hosted the Mildred Lady Eagles - a team undefeated in district - last Tuesday at Harriman Park. The Lady Eagles came out swinging and hit pitcher Allison Grace Grissett for four runs in the first inning. Grissett singled to center in the bottom of the inning and Katie Glick took a base on balls, but both girls were stranded.

In the top of the second the Lady Bison held MHS scoreless, but Buffalo went down in three in their next atbat.

Mildred exploded for eight runs in the top of the third. Grissett and Glick both singled in the bottom of the inning, but again the Mildred defenders got out of the inning without allowing a run.

Glick took the mound in the fourth but walked several batters and MHS pushed their lead to 19 before the Lady Bison could end the inning, and the abbreviated game ended 19-0 after four innings.

BHS rebounded with a big 19-5 win over the girls from Marlin on Friday. The Lady Bison were hitting well and kept the runs coming in with steals and good base running. Offensive highlights included Taylor Rutledge’s in-the-park homerun, Erica Rios had a hard-hit double, and Grissett got on base four times. Briana Johnston got her first hit ever and got on base four times. Defensively, Rachel Sullivan made three straight plays at the shortstop position in the fifth inning, throwing to first-baseman Rios for the outs.

This week, Coach Kay Young’s Lady Bison host Riesel at Harriman Park on Monday, then start the second round of district play on Thursday against Teague. That game, too, will be played here at Buffalo’s Harriman Park as construction continues on the district’s new softball /baseball facilities.
