OISD extends Superintendent’s contract
Savannah Mineo was Oakwood’s Elementary Student of the Month for December. The Oakwood ISD School Board met Thursday night, January 27th. Although brief, this meeting was anything but normal. In the middle of the meeting, the trustees called for a closed session. In this closed session, the board discussed their yearly Superintendent's evaluation. The evaluations must have been favorable as the board voted to extend Superintendent Richard Scoggin's contract to 2015.
Before the closed session, the Board awarded Student of the Month honors for December and January. The Elementary Student of the Month for December was Ethan Edgemon and the Secondary Student of the Month for December was Morgan Mulson. The Elementary Student of the Month for January was Savannah Mineo and the Secondary Student of the Month was Robert Burden.
The board also voted to hire Edward Adair, owner of EJS, to procure the new electric service contract for OISD. The last time Adair was there, 5 years ago, he worked for another company. Since then, he has stuck out on his own. Before the board chooses the electric provider for the schools, Adair will gather quotes from all of the providers that service the area and recommend the best deal to them. The old rate procured 5 years ago was .086 per kwh with about a half a million kilowatt per hour usage by the school anually. Adair will be looking to beat that rate, or at least match it. As the rates for electric service can change in a matter of days, the board voted Scoggin to execute the contract on behalf of OISD as soon as Adair comes back with the recommendation.
Morgan Mulson was named OISD’s Secondary Student of the Month for December. After the closed session, the board trekked down to the Elementary Library for a School Board Recognition Dinner. It was also a time to celebrate Scoggin's birthday. After the celebratory meal, the board headed back to the board room to finish up business. The board called for an election to be held on May 12, 2012 to fill positions that will be expiring. The two seats up for the election are currently held by Chris Agapiou and Terry Johnson. Both men have said they intend on running again.
Robert Burden was named OISD’s Secondary Student of the Month for January.. The School Calendar is getting some modifications. Adopted last year, the Flex Days Calendar allowed for students with good attendance and disciplinary records, who also passed all of their classes and Taks tests, to be rewarded by finishing school 10 days early. This also allowed for extra tutoring for failing students and those who would have to take the Taks tests a second time. This year, the board wanted to give those students who are struggling a little extra incentive, and more chances to earn rewards for their hard work. The 10 days the State allots will not be grouped at the end of the school year, as it was last year, but instead 2 of those days will be attached at the end of the current six weeks and 2 more at the end of the 5th six weeks. This will give the students who qualify two 4 day weekends. One more day will be awarded at another time, to be determined later. It was suggested by Scoggin that a day around Easter is a possibility, or even an extra day for Spring Break. That leaves 5 days to attach to the end of the school year, still allowing for early release and a jump start on the Summer Break for those students who earn that right.
Ethan Edgemon was Oakwood’s Elementary Student of the Month for January. A change has also been made to the Sports Calendar. The Monday night home games for the Jr. High Boys and Girls have been rescheduled for Thursday beginning at 4:00PM. The boys will be split into two teams again and will play two games back to back.
