Area cowboys and cowgirls shine at THSRA Rodeo #8
Buffalo’s Blake Strack won the Steer Wrestling at THSRA Region 9 Rodeo #8 in Crockett. Hazing for Strack is BHS’ Austin Courmier. Texas High School Rodeo Association's Region 9 cowboys and cowgirls competed in Rodeo #8 on January 22 in Crockett's Porth Arena.
The best finish by Leon County students came in STEER WRESTLING. For the second time this season, BHS junior Blake Strack won the event, doggin' his steer in 4.890. BHS' Austin Courmier placed 2nd with a 5.460. With four rodeos left in the season, Courmier continued to hang on to the lead in the event, and Blake moved up to second.
Centerville's Callie Padgett also had a good rodeo at Crockett. She finally got the run she's been waiting for in BARREL RACING and placed 5th among 57 entrants, running the pattern in 16.568. She was 4th in GOAT TYING with a 8.920 tie-down. Finallly, the CHS senior took 7th in POLE BENDING with a time of 21.211.
Jake Hughes of Buffalo had two Top Ten finishes at Rodeo #8. She was 5th in BREAKAWAY ROPING with a 19.190 and remains the event leader. Hughes was 10th in GOAT TYING with a 10.010 and earned more All Around points with a 21.793 in POLE BENDING that was good for 15th place.
In TEAM ROPING, the BHS' Austin Courmier and Austin Rayborn placed 6th with 12.630. Bryce Strack and Justin Henson of Madisonville placed 8th by stretching their steer in 12.860. It was their best time of the year and their highest finish in the event.
CALF ROPING proved to be the undoing of the local cowboys and in BULL RIDING the scorecard read Bulls 11 - Cowboys 0.
Padgett is still in second place in the race for the title of All Around Cowgirl. Hughes is 3rd in the All- Around and solidly in the lead for the Rookie Cowgirl buckle. Courmier leads the race for All Around Cowboy with Rayborn is in third.
