Where the Music Plays

David Parker

Ever since last September, when local band Gypsyhead took a long journey into a recording studio, we have been waiting on the results of that adventure. Well after several months of mixing, nit picking, art design, and stressing. The deal is done, Gypsyhead's first album (CD) is released. Now, I usually have a rule I go by in this column, and that is to try not to write about the band that I play in. But as they say, sometimes, 'rules are made to be broken.' Besides, as a man told me the other night, 'If YOU don't put yourself out there who else is gonna know about you. You have the power of speak and pen.'

So what started out as a 'CD Release Party for Gypsyhead at Wild Bills in Crockett Texas this past Saturday night, turned into a few surprises for me and other members of the band. First thing there, before setting up on stage, I was pulled to the side by radio personality Jimmy Hill. He talked to me extendedly about what I had done in music prior to Gypsyhead... when I played solo and was a guest on the Morning Madness show...when he gave my music air play. He told me of potential possibilities for the band. Then he gave me a microphone.... the one I was using on the air when I was Carla and his guest on their show. I was speechless...it meant a great deal to me. I, of course, used that mic for the gig that night...it is awesome.

Gypsyhead Gypsyhead Later that night, came another surprise...between sets came an announcement while we were on stage. Each member of the band was presented a plague of Gypsyheads recording accomplishment from Disc Makers and JM Studios, doing the honors was once again , Jimmy Hill. It was a very humbling feeling. I mean, I was just going to play a gig, have some fun, and spread out some CD’s. But it turned out to be more... it turned into a very moving, rewarding night, I felt totally blessed. So....maybe this music thing might work after all. I guess we'll wait and see where it goes from here......... to where the music plays.
