Varsity Bison men battle on
High-flying J.J. Kolb led the Bison offensive effort at Blooming Grove on Friday.
VanGophoto The Varsity Bison were still looking for their first district win when they hosted Eustace on Tuesday. Kyle Read led the Bison effort in the first quarter and the score was tied after the first 8 minutes. The second quarter ended with a 13-point run by the Bulldogs and Buffalo trailed by 12 at halftime. The buckets still eluded the Bison in the second half and they lost the contest 19-32.
Tate Hartley hit 7 of 9 free throws on his way to an 9-point game. Read finished with 4, Cameron Hughes, Reid Courmier and Paul Mata each added a basket. Hughes led the defense with 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Jacob Davis pulled down 6 rebounds.
The Bison travelled to Blooming Grove on Friday, and played hard after getting off to slow start. After spotting the Lions 10 points, the Bison trailed 9-24 after a quarter. They stepped up their game in the second period and outscored their opponents 12-8, led by the shooting of sophomores J.J. Kolb and Adam Simpson and the rebounding of Courmier. BGHS came out hot in the third and stretched their lead to 25-50 going into the final quarter. The Bison never gave up and battled to a 42-59 loss.
Kolb led his teammates with 14 points. Simpson and Davis finished with 6 points apiece. Hartley and Read scored 5 each. Jose Nava, in his first Varsity outing, contributed 4 points, 3 steals and 6 rebounds. Mata added a bucket. Courmier led the rebounding with 8.
This week BHS has an open date on Tuesday and hosts Leon on Friday, January 27.
