CHS Tigers lose to New Waverly, defeat Groveton

By Paul K. Matney

The Centerville

Tigers played hard all night but the New Waverly Bulldogs came out on top 64-51.

The Tigers fell behind early and trailed after the first quarter, 13-20. The shots still weren’t falling in the second period and CHS trailed 22-40 at intermission. The Tigers scored 16 points in the third quarter but the offense could not come up with the shots in the final period and Centerville came up short, 51-64, despite playing hard all four periods.

As usual, Jamal High had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Garrett Chase had a solid game directing the Tigers offense and scoring 9 points. Ryan Payne tossed in 7 points.

In an earlier contest the JV boys had a hard time and lost to the Bulldogs 20-50. The Tigers trailed by 8 after the first half but the taller Bulldogs got more rebounds and ran the fast break effectively in the second half and went home with a 50-20 victory. Devin Jawkoviak led the JV with 9 points and collected 3 rebounds. Hayden Nash showed a lot of hustle on offense and defense.

The Varsity Tigers traveled to Groveton on January 20th and won 56-31 to even their district record at 3-3. CHS built a 11-1 lead after the first period and led 28-8 at half time. The Tigers outscored Groveton by 5 in the third quarter to lead 38-13 going into the final period. Both teams scored 18 points in the final quarter and the Tigers left with a 56-31 win.

Ryan Payne led the Tigers in scoring with 13 followed by Jamal High with 11, and Tulley Pickens netted ten. High pulled down 11 rebounds and Pickens grabbed 10 to lead the Tigers on the boards, giving both players a double/double game.

The Tigers must put together a winning streak to claim a playoff spot. They host district leader Crockett on January 24th before traveling to Anderson for a game on January 27th.
