Bureal Ferguson (pronounced Burl, after his grandfather), graduated from the Police Academy in 2009. Before beginning his law en- forcement career, he chose to back to school to earn his degree in Criminal Justice. His first assignment was to the Trinity Police Department. He worked there as a Reserve Officer for "a little over 7 months when he, along with his fellow reservists, were given the news that the City Council had dropped the reserve program.

The reservists began calling around to other police and sheriff departments looking for immediate openings. Ferguson found that he had three options. Cherokee County was farther away than he wished to move his wife and children. Whitehouse was not that far but their interview process was taking more time than he liked. Oakwood looked promising. It was close, they wanted someone who could start right away, and it was a small town. After speaking with Chief Hommel, Oakwood looked even better. The decision was made.

Ferguson commutes to Oakwood from Palestine, where he, his wife, and three of their five children live.
