Van’Go’photo BHS workhorse Aurelio Dominguez is a hard man to stop. The senior running back amassed 290 yards and three touchdowns against the Gladiators on Friday. Van’Go’photo Coach Mark Read's Buffalo Bison shook off a disappointing district opener last week and rebounded with their best offensive effort of the season for a big win at Brewer Field on Friday night. Their opponents, the Italy Gladiators, were Dave Campbell’s pre-season pick to win District, with an outstanding senior quarterback, Anderson, expected to play Division I college ball next year. The Bison proved more than up to the challenge, and won the battle with the Gladiators, 41-21.

A fair catch by Logan Jones started the Bison's first possession at their 30-yd-line. Kendall Sheffield and Aurelio Dominguez shared the rushing load as the Bison strung together five quick first downs and sprung Sheffield into the endzone with 10:08 still on the first-quarter clock. David Rodriguez' PAT kick was right on and Buffalo led 7-0.

Now, THAT was fun! Jorge Herrera, Curtis Yates, Jonathan Cates and teammates enjoy the moment as the BHS school song wafts through the air following the Bison victory over Italy. Van’Go’photo Now, THAT was fun! Jorge Herrera, Curtis Yates, Jonathan Cates and teammates enjoy the moment as the BHS school song wafts through the air following the Bison victory over Italy. Van’Go’photo Italy survived a fumble in their first possession, and Anderson completed a big pass on 3rd-and-18 to keep their drive alive. They scored with 6:04 on the clock and split the uprights to tie the game.

Buffalo answered quickly. Jose Dominguez picked up a first down in Gladiator territory. Aurelio charged 28 yards for another. QB Tate Hartley completed a 10-yard pass to Sheffield for the next, setting up A. Dominguez' first touchdown run. Rodriguez added the PAT.

Colton Henson made a quick stop on the kickoff, allowing no return. The Bison defenders refused to give up even a yard and IHS soon punted.

Buffalo's O went to work at their own 32-yd-line. J. Dominguez found a seam good for a 20-yard gain, then A. Dominguez took the next three handoffs straight to pay dirt, dragging defenders into the endzone. Rodriguez nailed his third PAT kick and BHS was on top, 21-7.

Anderson led Italy back up the field with an aerial attack, but a holding call on the Gladiators nullified a touchdown pass. Jonathan Cates and Canton Calhoun teamed up for a sack, setting up 4th down inside the 10. Anderson's next pass was picked off by Kyle Richardson -- his 5th interception of the season -- to put the Bison offense back on the field.

Sheffield and A. Dominguez moved the ball to midfield. Hartley covered a fumble to keep the drive alive, and J. Dominguez had some good carries to get the Bison into scoring position. On 1st-and-10 at the 15, Sheffield took the handoff and charged in for his second TD. Rodriguez' 4th PAT put BHS up 28-7 with 6:17 left in the half.

Defenders Cates and J. Dominguez made two stops in the backfield to snuff the Gladiators' next drive and force a punt, but BHS’ offense was held to three-andout. Italy used passes to get deep into Bison territory just before halftime, but the Bison D bowed up to stop that threat.

Halftime featured the Bison band, the Belles in a dance choreographed by Cassie Ferguson, and a very entertaining performance by the IHS band.

Italy had the first possession in the second half. Ryan Read made a big stop on a pass play. Cates, Garrett Henson and Thomas Corbin kept pressure on the QB, but a completion and a penalty on the Bison aided the Gladiators' drive and they scored on a completion from the 5-yd-line with 8:09 on the 3rd-quarter clock to close to 28-14.

The Bison kept their focus -- and kept doing what was working so well. Four plays later Aurelio Dominguez found a gap in the defense and galloped 61 yards for his third TD.

Buffalo mustered another great defense stand, with Calhoun batting down a pass and Cates coming through with a sack on the quarterback, forcing the Gladiators to punt. Aurelio Dominguez was the workhorse on another march to the endzone and Sheffield barrelled in from the twenty for his third TD. The PAT flew wide, but the Bison had a pretty comfortable 41-14 lead as the third quarter ended.

Thomas Corbin and Austin Courmier led the defensive effort on Italy’s next drive, but the Gladiators did manage to narrow the gap with a TD. They forced Buffalo to punt and were soon driving again but Richardson and the Bison successfully defended each pass and the defense held again.

Dominic Jackson was the go-to man for the Bison’s final series, and they were driving as the clock ticked away. The game went into the record book as a W for BHS: 41-21.

The Bison’s offensive statistics were impressive: 518 rushing yards on 54 carries, plus 10 yards on Hartley’s lone pass to Sheffield, for a 528-yard total. Aurelio Dominguez averaged 11.6 yards -- 25 carries for 290 yards and 3 TDs. Jose Dominguez rushed 12 times for 105 yards, Sheffield ran 10 times for 88 yards and Dominic Jackson rushed for 33 yards on 4 carries. The defense was led by Cates’ 11 tackles and one sack, followed by Jose Dominquez (5 tackles, 1 sack), Richardson (4 tackles, 1 interception) and Jacob Rodell (4 tackles, 1 sack.)

This week Buffalo takes their 1-1 record on the road to face 0-2 Blooming Grove. Axtell leads the district with a 2-0 record, and Centerville, Leon and Eustace are 1-1, so every game becomes a mustwin in the tight district race.
