VanTravis Cunningham paid a high price for his kickoff return in the opening moments of the BHS/Mildred contest -- suffering a dislocated shoulder after a horrific head-on collision. Van The Bison had a huge Homecoming crowd for last Friday’s game against the Mildred Eagles. The teams were well matched and the game was exciting, but injuries to key players proved costly and the Bison ultimately lost the contest, 13-21.

BHS won the toss and elected to receive, but speedster Travis Cunningham took a wicked hit on the opening kickoff and was soon headed to the sideline with an injury to his left shoulder.

After picking up one first down, BHS had to punt from 4th-and-5. The defenses ruled the field for the next few possessions and the teams traded punts, then Mildred broke a long run. Saxton Sims caught the ball carrier at the 2-yardline, but the Eagles went on to score on the next play.

Jose Dominguez took Cunningham's spot on the ensuing kickoff and got a good return into Eagle Territory. QB Ryan Read connected with Garrett Henson, then Jose Dominguez, Aurelio Dominguez and Dominic Jackson picked up good ground gains, moving the ball to the Eagle-35. From there, Read hit Jose Dominguez with a pass for a touchdown. David Rodriguez added a PAT kick and the game was tied, 7-7, at 3:12 in the first quarter.

MHS bobbled the ensuing on-side kick and Ivan Rivas recovered for the Bison to put the BHS offense right back on the field with great position. On the next play, however, Read was looking for Kyle Richardson and the pass was picked off at the goal line -- Buffalo’s first interception of the season.

Switching to defense, Read was covering an Eagle pass attempt and suffered a dislocated right shoulder. As the sympathetic home crowd watched, the trainer pulled the shoulder back into place, but Read joined Cunningham on the sidelines for the rest of the game.

Tate Hartley stepped up to quarterback the Bison, but some of the wind had been taken out of the BHS sails. The Bison fumbled away their next possession, and had to punt on the next. Mildred dred survived a fumble to score just before halftime and went up by 7 as the teams went to the locker rooms.

The Mildred band, the Belles and the Bison Band performed at halftime, setting up the crowning of the 2010 Homecoming Queen. Alexandrea Jenkins was crowned, and her court included fellow seniors Evelyn Espino, Nikki Dorman and Jordyn Briscoe.

The Bison defense made a big statement on the Eagles first possession of the second half, holding MHS to 3-andout. Hartley then took the Bison down the field, completing passes to Dominic Jackson and Kendall Sheffield. Dominguez, Dominguez and Jackson rushed for additional gains, putting BHS in scoring position. The Bison dodged a bullet in the form of another fumble, but Hartley managed to scoop the ball up for a gain to keep the drive alive, and Aurelio Dominguez fought his way into the endzone. The kick to tie the game went just wide of the goal post, and BHS trailed by one, 13-14, late in the third quarter.

Mildred answered quickly, scoring with 9:49 left in the game. Buffalo drove right back, and were inside the 10-yard-line when a series of consecutive penalties killed the drive and the ball went back to MHS. The BIson defense, led by Travis King, forced a punt and BHS took over at their own 38-yardline, but could not generate a first down, and Mildred got the ball back at midfield and managed to run out the clock for the win, 13-21.

The Bison had 88 yards in the air and 254 yards rushing for a total of 342 offensive yards. Read completed 3 of 5 passes for 58 yards, 1 TD and 1 interception. Hartley was 3 of 5 for 30 yards.

Jose Dominguez had two receptions for 43 yards and one TD. Dominic Jackson caught 2 for 29 yards. Aurelio Dominguez led the rushers with 27 carries for 128 yards and 1 TD, followed by Jose Dominguez (11 for 73), and Dominic Jackson (10 for 49). Leading the Bison defenders, Jacob Rodell had 10 tackles, Jose Dominguez had 9 tackles and one sack, and D.J. Jackson had 8 tackles. Tate Hartley and Austin Courmier each defended 2 passes.

THIS WEEK the Bison travel to Grapeland to wrap up their non-district schedule on Friday, September 24 with kickoff set for 7:30. October 1 is scheduled as an open date for the Bison.
