Tales from WannaBea Farm

Joyce Stark Joyce Stark Temporary River

The rains came and the legendary Pasadena, Texas floods that came with it. Cars were completely under water on some of the main streets and in the low-lying side streets through the neighborhoods the water ran like rivers. The storm subsided as quickly as it had begun, the sun now shining brightly on the flood waters.

The boys were home alone and naturally, being boys, they did not even have to think up mischief. It just came naturally to them. Looking down the steep driveway from the house to the street, they all came to the same idea at once. Turning to look at their dad’s boat, parked in the driveway, just a few feet from the water, they all had the same thought and grinning at each other, they ran to remove the chocks from behind the trailer wheels.

Ooops! Before they realized it the trailer had rolled down the driveway and into the street, the boat floating above it. “Huh”, Kyle said dryly, “THAT worked out well. Come on, get in and put your life jackets on.”

Clambering in and grabbing their jackets, they were ready for anything as their big brother started the engine. “Yeehaw”, they yelled as they sped down the street, waving at their friends.

“Hey, stop! I want to ski,” Bat yelled at his brother and as the boat came to a stop he grabbed the skis and bailed out of the boat. Donning the skis, he grabbed the ski rope that Shane had tossed to him and signaled that he was ready.

Skimming down the streets lined with the neighborhood kids watching them, they were the envy of the neighborhood. The neighborhood kids, anyway.

“Let’s take her in,” Shane yelled, after they had all had a turn skiing. “I’m getting hungry.” “Me, too” the others chimed in as Bat brought the boat in to the curb.

Tying the boat to a tree, the boys tromped into the house and raided the fridge for sandwich fixings before settling down in front of the TV while eating their lunch. Soon they were engrossed in the movie, completely forgetting about the boat.

“Uh oh,” they heard Kyle mutter as he glanced away from the TV and out the window. Looking out the window they saw that the water had receded and the boat and trailer were both sitting on the pavement in the middle of the street.

Be sure and read next week’s Buffalo Press to see how their devious little minds get them out of this mess...
