Oakwood Panthers Crush the Fort Worth Nazarene Lions

By Melissa Missildine

Ouch! The final score...66 to 18. The officials weren't the only ones calling out for mercy [rule] after the Oakwood Panthers got through with the Fort Worth Nazarene Lions this Saturday. The OHS Panthers traveled to Azele Christian in their first official game of the season. After losing one of their coaches, Defensive Coordinator, Steve Davis, just a couple of weeks ago... what a way to start things off right and pay homage to his memory!

When Athletic Director, Mike Heckathorn, was asked what he felt was the contributing factor is this big win, he said, "They played hard the whole way through the game. That's what counts the most."

The Lions picked up the first touchdown of the game. It wasn't long before James (Junior) Edwards picked up one of his own off a 48 yard run. The Lions picked up the next TD before Marcus Howard swooped in with a 50 yard kick return! Edwards backed that up with a 35 yard run resulting in a score. Damiyne Durham had a 35 yard interception return for the next Oakwood TD and Travis Eldridge picked up the extra 2. Edwards ran 40 yards for another TD and Eldridge kicked in 2 more points. Durham was next to score off an amazing 60 yard interception return! Eldridge picked up 2 more before throwing a sweet 61 yard pass to Durham for another Panther TD. Fort Worth Nazarene managed to pick up just one more touchdown before the Panthers shut them down. Then Edwards ran 25 yards to put the ball into the endzone. Jerome Dawson ran 13 yards for a Panther touchdown before Louis Collins picked up the last Oakwood TD off a 12 yard run.

The defensive played a good game as well. Howard had 11.5 tackles, 5 assists, and 1.5 tackles for a loss. Durham had 5 tackles, 6 assists, and .5 TFL. Edwards got 4 tackles and assists and a TFL. Dawson picked up 4 tackles, 2 assists, and 1.5 TFLs. Collins and Cardarell Stubblefield (Stubbs) each had 3.5 tackles, 3 assists, and 2 TFLs. Chris Jackson had 3 tackles, and a couple of assists while Shawn Jackson picked up a couple of tackles too. Robert Myrick got in a pair of tackles and a couple of assists. Christian Brummett picked up a tackle and Alias Sardaneta picked up .5 tackles, an assist, and .5 TFL.

With the first win of the 2010 season under their belt, the Panthers are looking to do it all again at home against Fruitvale on September 3 at 7:30PM.
