Amy Moffett joins Buffalo Elementary staff
First grade teacher Amy Moffett
Amy Moffett joins the Buffalo Elementary School teaching staff this year as one of the five First Grade teachers at the fastgrowing campus. Principal Johnny Veretto commented that it is a good thing the district was able to open a fourth school this year, as his campus would have been totally out of room otherwise.
Miss Moffett (no relation to the nursery-rhyme heroine) is enthusiastic about her new role. The first-year teacher completed her studies at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall in May of 2009 with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. During her student teaching at Marshall ISD she observed in several grades and found that first grade was "where I click -- where I fit best!" She believes first grade is important in giving students a good reading base and laying the foundations of math. Skimming over her list of students, she beamed, "The closer it gets, the more excited I am to see their little faces, get to know their little personalities."
During her student observations Moffett feels she gained some important insights into her new vocation, sharing, "You learn what not to do from the bad teachers and take notes from the good ones." Amy credits at strong first grade mentor there at Marshall with sharing skills that will serve Moffett well at BES. "She showed me how to love kids and keep the classroom maintained while making learning fun."
Moffett is a native of Winnsboro, Texas, and her hobbies include reading, scrapbooking and crafts of all sorts, including sewing and quilting -- interests which she shared with her mother, who passed away when Amy was 17. She also lost her father to cancer three years ago. Amy moved to Buffalo over the Fourth of July weekend and is enjoying the Country Life, sharing, "Every morning I hear a rooster and a donkey -- and I live IN town!" She has two dogs which she admits are "my very spoiled babies": a blue heeler mix named Sugar and Freddy, a Shih Tzu.
