Van A good crowd of football fans got a pre-season look at the 2010 Bison team at the annual Purple/Gold Scrimmage on Saturday morning. Head Coach Mark Read had enough varsity players to make up both an offense and a defensive unit when the Bison squared off for the first time in pads. The JV and Freshmen squads also matched up, giving the coaches a good look at their entire team.

In the starting quarterback position, Ryan Read threw the ball well. Travis Cunningham and Saxton Sims caught passes and turned them in to big gains, so the passing game looked sharp. The Bison backfield also showed breakaway potential and the running game looks solid with the return of Jacob Rodell and the Dominguez brothers, Aurelio and Jose.

Asked about newcomers to the Bison lineup, Coach Read noted that Garrett and Colton Henson return to BISD after attending school in Fairfield in recent years. “Both the Henson boys did a good job for us -- they’ll add a lot to what we do. Kyle Richardson came from Forney and I think he did a pretty good job on defense at corner. JD Baxter and Pierce Johnson -- guards on the JV team -- they’re both starting to pick up on our system and once they figure out what we’re doing, I think they’re going to contribute, too.

I thought we did a pretty good job executing offensively for this early in the season -- thought we threw the ball pretty well. There are a lot of possibilities there,” Read summed up.

With the goal of keeping their team healthy, the Bison coaching staff kept the scrimmage short as Saturday’s temperatures soared.

There have been a few changes in schedules for the coming weeks. Normangee will join Teague and Buffalo in the scrimmage on Saturday, August 14, still set to begin at 10:00. The Bison will travel to Frankson on Thursday, August 19, but the start time has been moved to 6:00 p.m.
