Veterans Affairs

By Joyce Stark

New DAV Van purchased with donations. Contributed photo New DAV Van purchased with donations. Contributed photo First of all I would like to apologize to Leon County Veterans Service Officers Gary and Susan Maples who were responsible for the recent Veterans Appreciation Day held at the Champions ranch. I had inadvertently given credit to the American Legion for sponsoring this event. Also, Susan and Gary have new offices in the Centerville Courthouse Annex on the corner of Hwy 75 and Main. They are there to help our veterans to file their claims with the VA every second and fourth Thursday from 9:00am to 3:00pm. They are also available by phone at 903-536-1251.

Also, Veterans, did you know that Lowe’s gives our veterans a 10% discount on their purchases? This can add up to quite a bit of money on purchases of large items or home improvement. Just be sure and take your VA identifi cation or a copy of your DD214 with you.

This past Wednesday DAV Chapter #63 finally received their new van and immediately donated it to the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System. The VA will now provide all maintenance, fuel, insurance, etc for the van until it is taken out of service and replaced with a new van which is needed approximately every two years.

Many of our veterans have no other means of transportation from the clinic to the VA hospitals in Temple and Waco where they must go for specialist care or medical aids and if it were not for this van they would be without health care.

I would like to thank all the wonderful folks here in Leon County who helped to purchase this van. THANK YOU!

The American Legion Post #335 will hold our monthly meeting on Saturday August 7th at 6pm. Our meeting is held at the Centerville municipal building located across from the Post Office. We would like to invite our members and their wives (or husbands) to attend. We will be having a "Pot Luck" supper. We ask that those who attend plan to bring a dish. As always, coffee, tea and soft drinks will be available.

Our American Legion Post is open to all Veterans and their families; you are welcome to attend our meeting. Anyone who would like further information on our organization you may send an email to HYPERLINK "http://us.mc520.mail.yahoo. com/mc/compose?to=amer icanlegionpost335@yahoo. com" \t "_blank" americanlegionpost335@ yahoo.com or call 903 536 1550.

The Disabled American Veterans meet the second Saturday each month at 10:00am following a pancake and sausage breakfast at 9:00am. Their meetings are held at the DAV Hall located at 927 Gardner Drive, Palestine, TX.

Don’t forget the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) and their Associates (AVVA) have their meeting on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm for the AVVA and 7:00pm for the VVA at the DAV Hall.
