Fans of the musical theater don't have to travel far for a fix this month. The Palestine Community Theatre troope is performing Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic, "The King and I" at the beautifully restored Texas Theatre in downtown Palestine. Opening night is this Friday, July 16th and the show will run for two weekends.
Jim Vincill is regal, pompous and vulnerable in the title role of the Asian monarch. Paula Ellis is charming and ideally cast as Anna Leonowens, the very proper English widow who finds new meaning for her life when she travels to Siam to teach the king's children. A large cast of talented, beautifully-costumed performers bring the story to life, and the familiar music is well done. The orchestra, under the direction of Chaundra Dantin, is excellent, and the vocalists could hold their own on Broadway.
The Texas Theatre is located at 213 West Crawford Street, and "The King and I" will be performed six times: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 16-18 and 23-25. Opening Night's reception begins at 6:30, Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30, and Sunday matinees are at 2:00. Advance tickets are available at Education Unlimited (903-723-8383) and the Palestine Chamber of Commerce (903-729-6066), or may be reserved for will-call pick up at the door.
Don't be misled by the meager ticket prices ($10 in advance, $12 at the door, $6 for kids). Director Sandy Couch Hanson's cast and crew do an amazing job and this show would be an entertainment bargain at any price. PCT regulars KNOW they are in for a treat, and first-timers will be delighted.
