      Here and there in East Texas. • Each holiday, a hay bale north of Bethany, on the Texas-Louisiana line, wishes travelers its good wishes for the season. The last time I was there, the hay bale was celebrating. St. Patrick’s Day. The hay bale, of course, is decorated by the landowner.

      Half Cup of Coffee It was harvest time in Nebraska and Irene was helping the neighbors feed the threshing crew. Threshing wheat was back-breaking, hot work and when the crew came in to lunch they were ravenous and looking forward to the homecooked meal they knew was waiting for them. This was a time when fast food was unknown.
