Cooking the old fashion way! The Campfire Cooking Kids Kamp, that was held on June 8,2010 by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service Leon County, at Fort Boggy State Park, was a big hit! The youth were taught about how the cowboys in the old days would use cast iron pots and pans to cook their meals on an open fire during the cattle drives.
After a quick history lesson the fun began. Each kid prepared a different part of the meal, either by cutting up vegetables or gathering wood for the fire. Each part that every kid did was put together to make a delicious meal. After they made the main course the youth then dove right in to make some desert! This was a great way to get the youth in touch with the outdoors and also having a little fun while learning.
We would like to extend a special thanks to Brian Van- Delist of Fort Boggy State Park for teaching the youth how to use the cast iron pans on an open fire, and also to Fort Boggy State Park for allowing Texas AgriLife Extension Service to use their facilities. Extension programs serve all ages regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.
