We get our surnames from our fathers. We may even get his brown eyes or winning smile or athletic talent. Dads may teach us how to fish, or throw a ball or -- if we’re really lucky -- teach us a trade or skill to help us make a living.
Some dads make us laugh, some make us cry, but no matter how different they are, every dad likes to be honored.
In 1910 Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, suggested a day be designated to honor fathers. She launched the first celebration on her father’s birthday that June in honor of the exemplary way William Smart had raised her and her five siblings after their mother died giving birth. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
Sunday, June 20th is Father’s Day. If you’re fortunate enough to have your dad close by, give him a hug and do something for him. Mow his grass or wash his car.
If you can’t hug your dad but can give him a call, do it, and don’t forget those really hard words “I love you” or even “thank you”.
If Dad is no longer around, let yourself remember the good things. Then smile.
