Johnny William Gunn was born on November 25, 1936 in Mont Belvieu, Texas to Claude & Loris Amanda (Williams) Gunn. He was raised in Barbers Hill. When Johnny was 13, his father passed away and he and his sister worked hard to help his mother and younger brothers. Johnny didn’t care for school but he loved the game of football; not only watching it on television, but playing it, as well. He was good at it, and he was a proud member of the 1954 Eagle football team at Barbers Hill. The Dallas Cowboys were his favorite professional team. Johnny retired as Quality Control Manager from Arco Chemical in Channelview, Texas and later started his own quality control company, JW Gunn Inspection Services.
Johnny did not like big crowds and was a quiet, gentle man. He enjoyed his cattle and everything connected to them. His favorite thing to do everyday was to drive the tractor and “check on” his cows. Johnny made a profession of faith and was baptized in 1956. He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church. He and his wife, Janyce had lived in Leona since 1991. Johnny’s greatest joy was his loving family, especially his wife, Janyce. He and Janyce met when they were 15 and 13, respectively, and that was that for them! They celebrated 53 years of marriage on March 15, 2010. Johnny passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010 in College Station, Texas. He is preceded in death by both of his parents; brother, Warren Gunn and son-in-law, Steven Seals.
