BHS’ 2010 Scholarship awards top $250K

This year’s BHS grads received a total of $259,300 in scholarship awards. Van’Go’photo Buffalo High School’s top scholars were rewarded with a banquet on Wednesday evening, June 2nd, followed by the annual academic awards ceremony. BHS’ own Jordan Nix and (“The Mysterious”) Damian Rodriguez contributed some entertaining diversions during breaks in the presentation ceremony. The evening culminated in the presentation of over $259,000 in scholarship awards from a generous community.
BHS graduates will have the following financial assistance as they pursue their education after high school:
The Allan Wilburn Memorial Scholarship ($1000) was awarded to Damian Rodriguez.
The Berry Petroleum Company Scholarship ($1500) went to Sarah Shilling.
The Beverly and Staley McBrayer Endowment Scholarship ($2000) was awarded to Meredith Shaw.
BISD band director Todd Baker presented Bison Band Scholarships to John Phillips Sousa Award Winner Michael Morelock ($1,000) and to Christian Negron ($250)
This year’s recipients of the Bobby R Casey Endowed A&M Scholarship ($1100 each) were Morgan Anderson and Brooke Trahan. They join four other BHS alumni who are attending that university and are eligible to reapply for that scholarship.
Amber McKelroy was awarded the first Bradford Ray Bing Memorial Scholarship ($200).
Buffalo 4-H Scholarships ($500 each) were awarded to Casey Helfenbein and Brooke Trahan.
Buffalo Chamber of Commerce Scholarships ($1000 each) went to Martha Zimmerman and Damian Rodriguez.
Buffalo Eastern Star Scholarships ($350 each) went to Heather Egan and Dakota Champion.
The Buffalo Ex-Student Association Scholarship ($500) was presented to Logan Beard, and the Buffalo Ex-Student Association- Louise Baker Scholarship ($500) to Tristan Brewer.
The Buffalo Lions Club presented $500 Scholarships to Tristan Brewer and Brooke Trahan.
Jared Hawthorne was awarded a $1000 Career Colleges and Schools of Texas
Scholarship.
The family of Don Oliver presented the first Don A. Oliver Memorial Scholarship ($1000) to Christian Negron.
The Florida Southern College Alderman Presidential Merit Scholarship ($44,000) and the Florida Southern College Robert L. Fryer, Jr. Scholarship ($4000) went to Chelsea Lord.
Kaila Grissett earned a Hill College Athletic Scholarship ($6,000)
Wain Glass presented two $800 scholarships from Hochheim Prairie Insurance Branch 225 to Sarah Shilling and Aaron Bell.
For the tenth year in a row, the Echols family awarded the Joel Echols Memorial Scholarship. The 2010 recipient was Damian Rodriguez ($1000).
Johnson 4-H Scholarships ($500 each) went to Brooke Trahan and Michael Morelock.
The Leon County “Go Texan” Scholarship ($1000) was awarded to Brooke Trahan.
The Leon County A&M Scholarship ($500) also went to Brooke Trahan.
Leon County Buckmasters Scholarships ($500 each) went to Casey Helfenbein and Brooke Trahan.
The Leon County Extension Education Association presented Michael Morelock a $500 scholarship.
The Leon County Farm
Bureau Scholarship ($500) went to Casey Helfenbein.
Brooke Trahan was awarded a $1500 scholarship from the Leon County Youth/Fair Livestock Association.
Limestone Project Employees’ Fund awarded Morgan Anderson a $500 scholarship.
The Lincoln College of Technology Select Scholarship ($1000) went to Jared Hawthorne.
Max Schlotter Region VI Education Scholarship ($1000) went to Michael Morelock.
National Honor Society scholarships in the amount of $1000 each were presented to KailaGrissett, Aracely Montano, Brooke Trahan, Meredith Shaw and Morgan Anderson.
The National Junior Honor Society awarded a $500 scholarship to Martha Zimmerman.
Navasota Valley Electric Co-op presented a $1000 scholarship to Casey Helfenbein.
Nucor awarded scholarships totalling $12,000 each to Blaize Harriman, Amber McKelroy, Logan Beard, Tristan Brewer, and Dakota Champion.
Gayle Wilson Ray and Kayla Ray presented the Wilson family’s thirtieth annual Penny Wilson Memorial Scholarship ($1000) to Martha Zimmerman.
The Phyllis W. Dodd Memorial Scholarship ($1000) went to Morgan Anderson.
The R. L. Holland and Clarice Patterson Holland Memorial Scholarships ($1000 each) were awarded to Damian Rodriguez and Ashley May.
Region X High School Rodeo Association’s $400 scholarship went to Dakota Champion.
SFA Academic Excellence Scholarship ($3000, renewable, up to $12000) went to Martha Zimmerman and Michael Morelock.
Zimmerman also received a $500 SFA School of Theatre Scholarship.
The Shelley Pate Scholarships ($2000 each) went to Kaila Grissett and Blaize Harriman.
Damian Rodriguez was the recipient of this year’s
Spanish Club Scholarship ($450).
The State Farm Texas High School Scholar Athlete Scholarship ($1000) was presented to Meredith Shaw.
The T.J. Ivey Foundation Scholarship ($1500) went Dakota Champion.
Brooke Trahan was the recipient of the TAMU Read Scholarship ($1,500).
Meredith Shaw received the TAMU-Commerce Presidential Scholarship ($6,000) and the Texas A&M- -Commerce Honors College Scholarship ($50,000).
A Texas High School Rodeo Association Scholarship ($1250) was awarded to Dakota Champion.
As Valedictorian of the Class of 2010, Morgan Anderson received the State of Texas Honor Graduate Certificate covering her first year’s tuition at Texas A&M.
Michael Morelock receive a Top 10% Scholarship from THECB ($16,000).
TVCC Beef Cattle Show Team Scholarship ($1000) was awarded to Jalisa Corbin.
The Goodwyn family awarded the Van Parker White Vocational Scholarship ($500) to Jared Hawthorne.
The Walters Buffalo Funeral Home Scholarship ($500) went to Radona Bounds.
The Ryder family presented the William H. Ryder Scholarship ($250) to Jared Hawthorne.
This year’s scholarships totalled $259,300.
