News from City Hall

By Julie Uptmor

The City of Buffalo has finished up some recent sewer upgrades, including adding newer, large lift stations in high use areas and removing old, obsolete stations that are no longer needed. Unfortunately, we have already run into some old problems that need to be addressed. Items are showing up in the sewer grinding pumps that are causing damage and sometimes complete failure of the new pumps. What kind of items could do such damage? Feminine hygiene products as well as underwear and towels are just some examples of items found in the pumps. These types of items can cause se- rious damage to a lift station pump. For this reason, the City of Buffalo is asking all its citizens to please flush only toilet paper down your toilet and help us keep our sewer system in good working order. Sewer stoppages are time consuming clean ups that can be avoided with just a little help from the population served. The costs incurred for repairs and/or replacement of lift station pumps could be used for future improvements.

I would like to remind everyone of the weekly services provided to the citizens of the City of Buffalo. Garbage pickup by Eagle Disposal is on Thursday of each week. Please have your cart out by 7:00 am. Sometimes, routes change and you may get missed if it’s placed out later. Eagle has been using an automated truck on occasion so please make sure the cart is next to the street with the lid opening facing the street. The maintenance department picks up brush and cut limbs on Monday and Thursday of each week. Limbs need to be no longer than 3-4 feet or larger than 2-4 inchs in diameter. Due to limited personnel and equipment, the City of Buffalo does not dispose of whole trees. If a homeowner cuts down a whole tree, they are responsible for disposing of it. Until further notice, the dump area located by the sewer plant will be closed. If you need to dump garbage, you will have to come by City Hall for approval. We do not except tires, oil, or any appliances containing Freon.

We have received several complaints from school bus drivers regarding vehicles not stopping for buses that are loading and unloading children on the local highways. Although school is about to release for the summer, please continue to watch for school zone lights and school buses loading and unloading children. We have been informed by the Buffalo Police Department that they will be patrolling the areas where this has been reported to be happening more heavily when units are available to do so. Please protect our children by stopping for the school bus when lights are flashing.

With the upcoming summer holidays, the Buffalo Police Department would like to remind all it’s citizens to make sure you are using your safety belt at all times when driving. All children need to be restrained regardless of age in safety seats, booster seats or a seat belt. Please protect yourself and your loved ones! Don’t be a statistic! Click it or Ticket
