New growth for graduates

By Nick Bain

It seems like the older you get the faster time passes. At the beginning of this year everyone told me that this year was going to fly by so fast I would not know what to think. However, I spent a large portion of Fall semester placing x's on my daily planner in anticipation for the year to truly take off.

Working at a grocery store I encounter several Centerville High School alumni periodically. It is extremely common for me to hear them say old adages such as,"School days are happy days," or "Enjoy it while it lasts," on a daily basis. My Grandparents who also contribute to these fun loving sayings also attended and graduated from class sizes no larger than thirty during the mid 1950's. Although, Centerville has grown some the class sizes remain small and naturally as a graduating high school senior it is also common for us to want to get out of Dodge as quickly as possible. However, there will be some positive experiences left to be had by the students still attending next year and for years to come.

Looking back, I will remember several things, (not all positive), but for the most part the experience undoubt- edly has been an enjoyable one. I remember my favorite teachers who made math, a subject of distaste for me, the most fun part of the day. I remember the English teachers who taught me how to read and write, a skill that I am most appreciative to have learned. I remember the science teachers who trusted us high school kids with scapels to cut open various unfortunate animals and my history teachers who taught us that in order to know where we're going we must know where we have been. Lastly, I will remember my always insightful librarian, adminstrators who rarely let me get away with anything, and the few true friends that I met along the way.

To sum it all up, High School, though the highlight of some people's lives, remains a stepping stone to me and several others, to a brighter and happy future. It is a time of finding your self, learning who you are, and who you will become. It is also a time to build the fundamental skills and characteristics that will help us all become productive and positive members of society. Most of all, it is the time before the time, where we will all hopefully find new growth.
