Cub Scouts give Old Glory a makeover

By Melissa Missildine

SEE STORY BELOW Photo by Melissa Missildine Cub Scout Pack 610 of Oakwood received a very important mission by a very important member of the community. That mission was to re-paint the American Flag billboard that greets everyone passing through Oakwood; hopefully in time for Memorial Day. It had faded to a rather unbecoming shade of ...lavender? It was hardly the image Oakwood wants to put out there for all the world to see! According to 2nd Year Webelos Scout Devon Missildine, "When Mrs. Winnie Hodges asks you to do something, you just do it. She does a lot for our school and our community. She's a great lady. Besides, we want to do our duty to God and our country and to help other people."

The Scouts got busy Monday getting the bottom red stripes re-painted, with only minor mishaps along the way. They have high hopes of completing the project on Saturday. They decided they would need to borrow a step ladder if they are going to reach the top stripes. They also decided that now that the red stripes look so bright, it only makes the blue field, the white stars, and the white stripes look bad. They are looking into getting more paint before Saturday to take care of that as well.

Scout Missildine wanted to remind folks that with the Memorial Day holiday coming up, now is a really good time to remember to take a good long look at their outdoor flags. "If your flags are tattered and torn, you shouldn't fly them. It's not respectful,” he pointed out. The Oakwood scouts are available to do a flag retirement ceremony for you, and recommended buying new flags (available in Buffalo at World Tents 903-322-5799)- “and you can get really big ones online!” he concluded.
