Lady Tiger Maygn Harris fights for the lead in her leg of the mile relay. Contributed photo The girls entered the meet with the 4th best time in the 4x200M relay, but a mere 1.5 seconds separated them from first place. It was a race from start to finish and anchor Kayla Brewer edged out third place Altair Rice by .02 hundredths of a second. This sent the girls on their first trip to the awards stand. With the big surprise in the 4x200M relay Athletic Director Kyle Hardee, started tallying points to see if the unthinkable was possible: Could the Lady Tigers win the 4x400M relay and win the overall state championship?
Then it was race time the 4x400M relay took center stage the final race of the year for 2A athletes across the state. Centerville entered in 12th place overall points, but entered the mile relay with the best overall time a 4:02. Altair Rice was also a top contender and if they finished 5th and the Lady Tigers finished 1st it would be a tie for the state championship.
The race started and the dogfight was on! In the first leg Kelsey Lagrone and Universal City Randolph made their baton exchanges nearly simultaneously. Then Kayla Brewer went against a tough Bangs and Randolph runner with Elkhart and Rice gaining ground. Kayla handed off to Maygn Harris and she flew out in her first 200 meters gaining the lead, then Elkhart pulled ahead of her in the final 150 meters, but she made one last surge gaining some important ground. Then it was down to the anchor -- Callie Padgett against the rest of the field. Who wanted it more? Elkhart and Callie has separated a little from the rest of the field, however Elkhart was pulling away from Centerville and in the final 100M Callie made up a good 10-meter difference to blow by Elkhart to win the 4x400M relay!
Little did the girls and many fans know that Altair Rice had fallen back to 5th place and the Lady Tigers had not only won the 4x400M relay, but they were also State Track and Field Champions of 2010, tying with Altair Rice.
Congratulations, Ladies. All of your hard work has paid off and you have earned the first state championship in school history. Also, congrats to all Region III 2A contestants participating at the state meet. The top two regional teams in the 4x200 and 4x400 finished 1st and 2nd at the state meet too!
