Lady Tigers win bi-district title

By Paul K. Matney

The Centerville Lady Tigers defeated Kirbyville twice in the best-of-three series in Huntington on April 30th to advance to the next round of the softball playoffs.

In the first game Kirbyville scored twice in the bottom of the second but the Tigers countered with three in the top of the third to take a 3-2 advantage after three innings. Both teams failed to score in the fourth and fifth but the Tigers scored five runs in the top of the sixth to break the game open. Kirbyville scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 8-3.

Jessie Long had a complete game giving up 4 hits, 3 runs, walking no one and striking out five batters. The Tigers gathered 8 hits with Long and Christy Wellman getting 2 hits each. Maygn Harris, Raimey Griffin, Becca Smith, and Brittany Thomas collected a hit apiece.

After a short rest the second game got underway and the Tigers struck for 2 runs in the top of the first but Kirbyville put a single run on the scoreboard in their half of the first. The Tigers added 2 more in the third and another 2 in the fifth for a commanding 6-1 lead. Kirbyville put another run on the board in the bottom of the sixth to leave the final score 6-2.

Long pitched another complete game giving up 6 hits, 2 runs, walked 1, and struck out five. The Tigers pounded out eight hits again with Harris, Smith, and Wellman collecting 2 apiece. Taelor Edgin and Raimey Griffin had a single apiece. Wellman also had 4 RBI’s to go with her single and double.

The Tigers will play Deweyville next with the time and place yet to be determined. It is not known if there will be a sudden death game or 2-3 series.

With continued good pitching, clutch hitting, and a tight defense the Tigers have a good chance to defeat Deweyville.
