Bison men split in this week’s district baseball contests

The Bison hosted their final two home games this week. They lost a highscoring game on Tuesday but finished with a solid win over Onalaska for the home fans on Senior Night on Friday.

CORRIGAN-CAMDEN

On Tuesday, April 13, Corrigan-Camden came to town to challenge the Bison pitching staff. Travis King started on the mound for Buf- falo, and gave up three quick runs in the top of the first. Two men were stranded when Jacob Rodell caught back-toback fly balls for Outs #2 and #3.

BHS answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Tate Hartley led off with a double and scored the first Bison run.

The defense retired the Bulldogs in three batters in the second, then Dylan Ansley got on with a walk and scored the Bison's second run.

In the third, King gave up three bases on balls and C-C pushed their fourth run across the plate before Rodell again caught two fly balls and Bell picked a runner off at second. Hartley started the third inning with another stand-up double. Bell traded places. with him with another, then advanced on a balk and stole home on a passed ball to knot the game at 4-4. King was stranded at third.

Van’Go’photo Ryan Read took over the pitching duties for the Bison in the 4th, but the Bulldogs got three walks and a double, and the BHS coaching staff sent Bell in to relieve Read. C-C continued to move their batters around the diamond and finished the inning with seven runs to go ahead 4-11.

BHS came back with a big inning of their own. Ansley walked, Taylor McGill was pegged and took a base. Two batters struck out and Read stepped up with a single. Bell walked, then King knocked one over the fence to bring the score to 9-11. The Bulldogs sent in a new pitcher and the Bison left three stranded.

Van’Go’photo Ty Tollett came in to pitch for Buffalo in the top of the 5th inning, and with a big double play and a pop up to Bell, the Bulldogs went three up, three down. Buffalo went down in three in the bottom of the inning.

The sixth inning proved disasterous for BHS. Tollett, then Hartley, then McGill took the mound, but no one could stop the Bulldogs and Corrigan-Camden scored ten runs. In their final at-bat BHS left three stranded and C-C had the victory, 9-21, on the Ten Run Rule.

ONALASKA

The Bison were overdue for a win and they got it on Friday afternoon, playing almost flawless baseball. It was the seniors’ final home game, and they made it a good one.

Coming up to bat, BHS’ first two batters were out, but Bell and King each singled and scored on savvy base running to put BHS on top, 2-0.

In the second and third innings, each pitcher faced only three batters.

Onalaska mounted a threat in the top of the fourth, but good defensive plays got the Bison out of the jam with no runs scored and three men stranded. In the bottom of the inning Bell had a stand-up double, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice RBI by Logan Beard.

The Wildcats finally pushed a run across in the fifth, cutting the Bison lead to two, 3-1.

The defensive battle continued in the next two at-bats, but in the bottom of the sixth Read connected for a stand-up triple, King brought him in with a double to the left field fence and Beard followed that with a stand-up double to score King.

The Wildcats left two stranded in the top of the seventh and the Bison won, 5-1. Tollett pitched 7 innings and gave up, 1 earned run on 5 hits, and threw 6 strikeouts. Offensively, King was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI’s; Bell went 2 for 3 with a double, 3 stolen bases, and scored 2 runs; Read was 1 for 3 with a Triple, and scored a run. Logan Beard was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The Bison will finish the 2010 season with road games at Anderson-Shiro on Tuesday, April 20th and at Groveton on Friday, April 23rd. Both games are scheduled to begin at 6:30.
